South Tyrol is part of Italy - the Italian name for this region is "Alto Adige".

Formerly it has been part of Tyrol (Austria), but this has changed after World War I and it was given to Italy.

In the bigger cities (Bozen, Meran, Brixen) meanwhile the main part of population is Italian, but overall the mother tongue of the about 450k inhabitants is:

68% German

29 % Italian

4% Latin

South Tyrol belongs to Italy. North and East Tyrol belongs to Austria. Majority of people in South Tyrol speak German, the rest speak mostly Italian.
